Patience and Anger

Patience and Anger – wisdom produces the former and foolishness produces the latter.

According to Proverbs 19:11 A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.

Proverbs 12:16 tells us that A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult.

We are told the same truth in a different way in Proverbs 10:12 Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs.

So what is patience? Do we become patient by trying harder? The attitude that we can change ourselves is the basic problem in our understanding of what our Lord Jesus Christ has come to do for us.

Galatians 3:1-5 You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. 2 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard? 3 Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? 4 Have you suffered so much for nothing—if it really was for nothing? 5 Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard?

Do we become more patience and less angry by following self-helps or by faith?

Patience is not an attitude. Patience is an evidence of holiness. Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience… The Holy Spirit produces His characteristics in us. The fruit of the Spirit is the fruit of holiness. We can try and fake. However, when we don’t get our way, or someone crosses us, the real us is displayed in our behaviour – the fruit of our anger produces disruption: Galatians 5:20 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: …hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, faction…

So, returning to where we started: Proverbs 19:11 A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense. How wise are you?

May our Lord bless you as you walk in fellowship with Him.
